Newtown Juniors FC

With all our onfield action last weekend predominantly focused on our Mini World Cup (kindlysponsored by Greystones and District Credit Union) we did however have one team inmidweek action and that was the under-12s. They kept up their good start to the shield competition with a 4-2 away win over Aughrim Rangers. Jake Robertson scored twice and there was one goal each for Dylan Dunleavy and Cathal O'Toole in a very good team display.

The following are the fixtures for the week Tuesday, August 20, to Sunday, August 25. Under-12s at home to St Anthony's B ko Tuesday at 7 p.m. (Cup second Leg); under-eights away to Arklow United Stripes ko to be confirmed; under-nines - Fixture to be confirmed; under-10s away to Wicklow Rovers White ko Saturday at 10 a.m.; under-11s away to Arklow United Stars ko to be confirmed; under-12s away to Enniskerry B ko to be confirmed; under-13s away to Avonmore B ko to be confirmed (Plate Play Off). (Fixtures and KO Times are subject to change)

COMMUNITY FUN DAY - MINI WORLD CUP: The Newtownmountkennedy Area group hosted a Community Fun Day last Sunday (18th). Loads of clubs and organisations got to show off what they do in the area. For our part we held a Mini World Cup kindly sponsored by Greystones and District Credit Union. We had four age groups under-seven, under-8/9, under-10/11 and under-12/13's. After a load of football was played on Friday night and Saturday morning in the group stages we had eight finals to host on Sunday.

In the under-12/13's group the trophy final Netherlands were too strong for Ireland and they ran out comfortable winners. Paudie Gammell and Jack Finnegan both scored hat tricks for the Dutch while Iggy Szpilka scored a late consolation for the Irish. In the cup final Germany justified their favourite tag with a 6-2 win over Switzerland. Mason Melia scored a first half hat trick to put the Germans in full control. Just before half time Brooklyn Doyle and Aaron Cawley scored either side of a Synnott goal to leave the half time score at 4-2. Further German goals from Synnott and Jack Coughlan left the final score at 6-2. One of the features of this game was an outstanding display in goal from Cormac Chance.

In the under-10/11's group the Trophy final was a close affair as Portugal edged out Uruguay on a 4-2 scoreline. For Portugal Cathal O'Toole scored twice and there were goals from Aidan Heffernan and Lennon McGuinness. Sebastian Anton replied with two goals for Uruguay. In the Cup Final Croatia comfortably defeated Colombia to take the honours. Among their goalscorers were Ryan Collins, Dayle Carthy, Jack Barlow and Nichita Neaga while Kacey Kelly and Albie Chance played very well. For a well bet Colombian team Dylan Dunleavy and Lauren Coffey were among those who kept going till the end.

In the under-eight/9's group we probably had the two best finals of the weekend. In the Trophy final Italy overcame the Spanish team on an 8-7 scoreline with Theo Messitt scoring the winning goal late on. Both teams left it all on the pitch with Finn Heffernan, Tyler Doyle and Eoin Ledwidge shining for the Spain team, with Rian Martin, Tiarnan Richardson and Noah Sinnott Elliott doing likewise for the winning Italy team.

If that final was good the Cup Final probably surpassed the Trophy Final especially for drama. Mexico led 5-1 halfway through the second half with David McCormack, Nathan Donohoe and Gerry Hoban all among the goals. Argentina looked dead and buried but they fought back and got a second wind and goals from Cian Richardson, Aaron Nolan, Tommie Ryan and Arthur Brunton forced the game into our first ever 1v1 gauntlet shootout. The Mexicans prevailed by 2-1 in the shoot out. Both teams deserve huge praise for putting on a fine display.

In our under-sevens group the Trophy Final was won by Belgium, who got the better of France on an 8-2 scoreline. For France among those who starred were Jessica McDonald, Chloe Mullen and Aaron O'Connor while among those who starred for the winning team were Jake McDonald, summer Doyle and Callum Carthy. In the Cup Final Brazil edged out England by 6-5 in another high scoring game. Best for Brazil were Bobby Duffy, Jamie Doyle and John Paul Dunleavy while among those who did well for England were Kaitlyn Mullen, Harry Duffy and Ellie Crimmins.

We finished the day off with our legendary tiny Tots game where stars of the future Lucy, Katie, Mason, Eoin, Jack, Saoirse and Ella. Well done to our two keepers David and Darren and also our special guest referee Samuel Kearns. Well done, all. While the weather was ok on Friday and Saturday we weren't so lucky on Sunday where we had to brave some heavy showers at times. Anyway the show went on and everyone needs to be applauded for that. Special mention to Helen, Lauren Geraldine, Grace, Nathan, Dave, John and Danny, who put in trojan work over the course of the competitions. Many thanks to the Greystones and District Credit Union for their kind sponsorship towards the cost of the trophies.

Two players from our Development Squad will celebrate their birthdays in the coming week and they are Tymon Chowanski and Callum Byrne. Happy birthday lads from all at Newtown Juniors FC.

Finally on a sadder note we extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of Roseleen Vickers (St Patrick's Road NTMK) and Shay Monahan (Upper Gratten Park Greystones).. May their souls rest in peace.
