Amazing skills displayed at inaugural Loreto Bake-Off
Three talented bakers pitted their skills against one another for the Great Loreto Bakeoff at the school recently.
The students are all members of the cake club and they got to the final of the first event of its kind at the school.
Lucy Cleary, Jolina Gojardo and Andreea Rotaru were put through their paces over a three-hour period on the Wednesday before they finished up for Easter.
Jolina was crowned the overall winner for her berry Victoria sponge. Lucy and Andreea both came up with fantastic creations and won joint-second for their vanilla layer cake and profiterole pyramid. Home economics teacher Jennifer Tobin said that the cake club meets each Thursday at lunch time, with one or two members taking a turn to bake each week. They bring in their cakes for everyone to taste, share the recipe and the members evaluate the recipe and give tips about what they liked and didn't like.
'It's really for people who are interested in baking,' said Ms Tobin.
At the end of the year they choose their favourite bake of the year.
The club began in 2011 with Ms Tobin and some of the girls, then other home economics teachers and two other teachers from the staff joined in. They usually have a trip each year, but they struggled to find something in budget this year so decided to have a bake-off and opened it up to the whole school.
The three finalists came in to the school on their own time and had three hours to bake from scratch and decorate their cakes.
Five teachers judged the work and it was an extremely close competition. The club plans to run the competition again next year.
