Retro Top Ten: This week in 1973
Considering their body of work and the accolades heaped upon them, it's hard to believe that The Carpenters never had a No. 1 hit in the UK and that their only Irish number one was 'Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft'.
Karen and Richard Carpenter were at their creative peak in the early- to mid-seventies and 'Yesterday Once More' perfectly demonstrates the sound and distinctive Karen vocal that sold millions for the siblings. Though just missing out on the top spot in both the UK and US Billboard charts, the song was The Carpenters' biggest selling record worldwide. Richard has said in interviews that it is his favourite of all the songs he has written.
• 'Yesterday Once More' was deprived its UK No. 1 by a seventies teen idol who had much solo success with a series of cover versions, including 'Young Love', a song from 1956 which had been a hit for a number of acts before he took it to the top of the charts in the UK and Ireland in 1973.
As a solo artist, Donny Osmond had two other UK number ones ('The Twelfth Of Never' and 'Puppy Love'). He also enjoyed chart success singing duets with sister Marie, and with his brothers as The Osmonds with hits such as 'Crazy Horses', 'Goin' Home' and 'Let Me In'.
The Osmonds' only UK number one, 1974's 'Love Me For A Reason', would afford Boyzone their breakthrough 20 years later, giving the Irish band a number 2 hit in the UK charts in 1994.
• The late, great Al Martino (who played the role of singer Johnny Fontane in 'The Godfather') was enjoying a third run of success with 'Spanish Eyes' in August of 1973. He had first recorded the song in 1965 when it reached No. 15 in the Billboard Hot 100. It was also a huge hit in Europe and, in 1970, reached No. 49 in the UK.
The song, with a tune by Bert Kaempfert originally titled 'Moon Over Naples', is among the 50 most-played songs worldwide.
