BRAY'S newest festival got off to a great start last week with a wonderful production of 'Jane Eyre' at Mermaid Arts Centre.

The students from the performing arts college put on the play, with proceeds from opening night going to the Simon Community.

They did four nights of the show at the Mermaid as part of the inaugural BIFE Arts Festival.

There was also a matinee performance on the Thursday afternoon attended by children from local primary schools who were captivated by the fates of Rochester and Jane.

Festival Director Simon Keogh is also a tutor on the performing arts course and saw the actors and crew through their run in Bray.

The next big event in the month-long festival programme will be 'Escape to Dance' at the mermaid on March 20, while the film students will present 'ShortCuts' on March 26.

There will also be seminars in games, music production, acting and dance as well as a Feis by the music centre on March 30.

To book tickets for the main events in the arts festival call the Mermaid on (01) 2724030.
