Top Tens: This week in 1967
From today's standpoint, this top ten from exactly 50 years ago is remarkable for the absence of any Beatles song, coming as it did two weeks after the release of the monumental 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', arguably the Beatles' magnum opus and certainly one of the most influential albums of all time.
But the Beatles did not milk their albums for hit singles and not one of their three single releases in 1967 came from 'Sgt Pepper's…'. Beatles aside, this is a classic top ten with a huge number one in 'A Whiter Shade of Pale'. The haunting, debut single from British band Procul Harum is one of fewer than 30 singles in history to sell more than 10 million. Procul Harum are still active, and it remains their only number one hit.
