Wicklow based film director and writer Alan Gilsenan will be a guest speaker at the launch of the new edition of A Life in the Trees by author Declan Murphy.

Declan Murphy released A Life in the Trees in 2017, centred on his love and appreciation for the Great Spotted Woodpecker. A new edition of his book has been commissioned by The Lilliput Press. A Life in the Trees is a personal account of a family of woodpeckers raising their young.

The Great Spotted Woodpecker was originally a vagrant species primarily during the winter months. However in 2009, after years of observation and study, there was evidence that they had returned to Ireland to breed, much to the excitement of Declan and the entire Irish bird-watching community. Since then, the author has followed the daily lives of this species, some of whom had taken up residence in a wind-torn Spanish chestnut tree near his home near Glendalough.

After graduating with First Class Honours in Modern English and Sociology from Trinity College, where he received the inaugural A.J. Leventhal Scholarship, Alan Gilsenan went on to direct as number of short movies and some documentaries.

He directed two dramas last year, the Canadian-set Unless starring Catherine Keener and The Meeting, focusing on the true story of a young rape victim confronting her attacker.

The launch is open to everyone and takes place on Thursday, March 21, at 6.30 p.m. at The Lilliput Press, 62-63 Sitric Road, Stoneybatter, Dublin 7.
