Call for young playwrights to come forward
Young writers are being offered the chance to create their own short plays during a series of free guided workshops with Fighting Words and Mermaid Arts Centre.
Applications close on September 2, with the first workshop starting on September 14.
Eight local writers under the age of 18 will participate in the unique collaboration.
The process, which includes mentorship and visits from theatre makers, will culminate in the young writers' plays being directed and performed by professionals in a one-off rehearsed reading on the stage of the Mermaid.
The Young Playwrights' Programme will run from September 2019 to April 2020.
There will be 10 script development workshops from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, with one to two each month.
There will also be opportunities to attend selected performances for free at mermaid, and a staged reading of the work created, taking place in April 2020.
To apply, applicants are asked to send through their name, age and contact number, along with a 300-500 word cover letter answering: Why would you like to be a part of the Young Playwrights' Programme?
The workshops are on September 14 and 28, October 19 and 26, November 23, December 14, January 11 2020, February 8 and 22 and March 212, with the rehearsals compulsory on April 8 and 9. Applicants are asked to confirm their availability for nine of the 10 workshops.
They are also asked to submit a sample of their creative writing, such as a scene from a play or extract from a story, of up to 10 pages.
