Reedeemer fight back to book place in knockout stages

Redeemer 3 Oldcastle 2

Redeemer booked their place in the knockout stage of the Kilmessan Shield with this win on Friday night. A draw against the bottom side in the second division would have been enough to secure their passage.

However, they received a jolt in the tie which was switched to the Muirhevnamor astro turf pitch due to the heavy evening rain that left Gorman Park doubtful whether it was playable.

Oldcastle took the lead near the half hour mark, when Paul Gartland was punished for delaying clearing the ball.

However, he quickly made amends by equalising five minutes from the break. He headed home from a corner kick.

Redeemer were sluggish in the opening half, but got into the strike after the break and Ray McCann finished off a good passage of play which he initiated to put them ahead on the hour.

Andy McDermott made it 3-1 in the dying minutes when he collected a ball over the top of the visitors defence and beat their goalkeeper.

Oldcastle reduced the deficit with the last kick of the game.

Redeemer: Kyle Murphy, Aidan Grimes (Dane Harrison 75), Paul Gartland, Shane English, Tiarnan Moran, Mark Lee, Ray McCann, Andy McDermott, Shane Derry ( Ryan Carroll 60), Kevin McCormack, Dean Sheils.
