Muirhevnamor pay for their mistakes with swift Cup exit

TWO defensive mistakes resulted in a swift exit for Muirhevnamor in the FAI Junior Cup with this first round tie played in horrible conditions in Dublin on Sunday in strong wind and heavy rain.

The visitors had the elements in their favour in the first-half and dominated possession in the opening half an hour only to fall behind when they allowed a home player a free header from a corner and he duly found the net.

It was back level pegging ten minutes from the break when Conor Mulvenna played a fine one two with Brian Begley on the left and Philip Duffy joined in the move which ended with Mulvenna scoring at the second attempt after his first shot was saved.

However, five minutes into the second-half Muirhevnamor conceded what turned out to be the decisive goal when Adrian Rafferty suffered an unfortunate mishap and the AUL side capitalised on it.

The visitors proceeded to peg back the home side and player manager Sean Dixon was unlucky not to equalise with a header after he came on as a substitute.

Striker Brendan Hughes also struck the top of the home crossbar, but the dismissal of full-back Stefan McKevitt for a second yellow card offence 15 minutes from the end effectively sealed Muirhevnamor's fate.

Muirhevnamor: Michael Cooney, Stefan McKevitt, Conal Mulvenna, Adrian Rafferty, Jimmy Cooney, Brian Begley, Sean Conlon, Philip Duffy, Thomas McShane, Padraig Smith (Sean Dixon), Brendan Hughes.
