Much 'Mor to do as Duleek earn surprise victory

Soccer, NEFL, Premier: Muirhevnamor 1 Duleek 2

The cup holders indifferent form and start to the season resulted in a surprise opening league game defeat at home to Duleek who have fought against relegation for the past couple of campaigns.

It was Marc Griffin's first game in charge on Friday night that saw the home side play sluggishly for the first hour, and concede two soft first-half goals.

The introduction of his predecessor Paudie Hearty brought about a transformation as the home side bombarded the Duleek goal for the rest of the game and they created enough chances to win a number of games.

Hearty who has decided to return to action after a long injury lay-off, halved the deficit with a fine finish, and went very close to snatching an equaliser.

The loss in the space of five minutes of Vinny Smith, their main scorer to date with three goals in their first two games in the Kilmessan Shield, along with Colin Finan, who made his seasonal debut, was a big disruption to the cup holders.

The pair went off injured with less than half the first half elapsed.

Muirhevnamor: Michael Cooney, Brian Begley, Nathan Murphy (Sean Conlon), Paul Mallon, Jimmy Cooney, Philip Duffy Mickey O'Kane, Brendan Hughes (Paudie Hearty), Vinny Smith (Tiernan Mulvenna), Colin Finan (Caolin Dines), Martin Smith.
