Glenmuir close in

Soccer, Division 3B - Duleek 2nds 2, Glenmuir 3

In the big game of the weekend in the NEFL Division 3B third-placed Glenmuir showed their battling qualities as they twice fought back from behind to reduce the gap on opponents Duleek to three points.

They also have a game in hand on the leaders who they have now completed the double over, having beaten them 4-1 last month at home in a run that has now extended to eight games without defeat.

They got off to a bad start on Thursday night, with Duleek taking the lead inside the first 15 minutes.

Lorcan Doyle made it level-pegging just before the break when he seized upon a bobbling ball in the box to force it into the home net, but there was enough time left for Duleek to regain the lead before half-time, which looked to be a damaging blow.

However, Glenmuir showed their character to bounce back, with Patrick Nicholson on hand this time to score from close range in the 65th minute.

Deane Browne then struck a stunning winner from distance when he rifled a shot from the right to the home net in the closing 10 minutes. Substitute Liam Cunningham played a crucial part in the lead-up to the goal, breaking up a home attack further down the field.

Glenmuir: David McKenny, Liam McKenny, Willie Kelly (Tolani), Shane Taaffe, Edgar Bitanis, Daniel Mullen (Liam Cunningham), Conor Mackin, Conor Nicholson, Patrick Nicholson, Lorcan Doyle, Dean Browne.
