Double delight as Quay Celtic clinch the cup

Soccer, U16 Cup Final: Quay Celtic 1 Bellurgan Utd 0

Quay completed the league and cup double with a goal in the first minute proving decisive in the under-16 cup final at Bellew Park on Sunday afternoon.

The champions capitalised on a defensive blunder with Daniel Nordone dispossessing a Bellurgan defender to score what was the only goal of the game.

As hard as they tried after that Bellurgan couldn't break down a resolute Quay defence, superbly marshalled by Robert McCaughey, with Fionn Kenny and Tiarnan Watters playing important supporting roles.

The surface and conditions perhaps wasn't conducive to Bellurgan's style of football, who also were missing a key player in Calum O'Hanlon who was suspended.

However, Quay were clearly determined to avenge what was their only defeat of the campaign by the opponents in the final match of the league, when they had they title wrapped up and assert themselves as the new kingpins in this age group.

Bellurgan won the title for the last three years in this age group, and last year completed the league and cup double, only to become victims of their own success with players moving on to play at a higher level.

Quay might have extended their lead towards the end of the opening half , with Nordone with another opportunity to score from a corner kick which the Bellurgan goalkeeper saved, while Neil Gartland was just wide with a shot.

Nordone also drew a fine save from the goalkeeper, and Dylan McGuill shot into the side netting.

Quay goalkeeper Con O'Donoghue made an important save to preserve his side's lead.

The second-half was mainly played in mid-field with the sides cancelling out each other, with McCaughey, Kenny and Watters holding a tight grip in defence for Quay.

With Bellurgan forced to commit players to attack in search of an equaliser, Jake McConville had a good chance to ease his side's task but shot over the crossbar.
