Signs are positive for Dreadnots in routine home win over Pats

Group A: Dreadnots 3-13 St Patricks 0-7 - Dreadnots got their 2019 campaign off to an encouraging start when they easily brushed off the challenge of St Patricks in Clogherhead on Saturday night.

The hosts built the foundations for success on a strong first half display in which Peter Kirwan and Carl Monaghan found the net, before a third goal from Richard Kirwan after the restart sealed a comfortable win.

With Jay Hughes in fine scoring form, the Dreadnots took a grip on the game in the opening quarter and had three points on the board before the Pats replied through Daragh Lafferty and Aidan McCann to cut the gap to 0-3 to 0-2.

However, the Clogher side then hit four unanswered points before Peter Kirwan lobbed the keeper to score the first goal on 14 minutes. His side continued to dominate and just before the short whistle, Carl Monaghan got in for a second goal to make it 2-11 to 0-3 at the break.

There was no way back for the Lordship side in the second half as Richard Kirwan's goal on 37 minutes put the game beyond any lingering doubt.

Dundalk Gaels came good in the second half to ensure they made a winning start to the 2019 campaign.

The Dundalk men made the trip to Beaulieu for this Group A Sheelan Cup encounter and after a tight first half the sides went in level at four points apiece. The visitors picked up the pace in the second half and outscored their opponents by 0-6 to 0-3 to take home the points.

David Moloney was top-scorer with three points while Paul McCrave and Jason Clarke each scored a brace.
