Little cause to celebrate

THERE wasn't too much for either side to celebrate at the end of this Division 2 encounter at Castletown on Sunday afternoon.

Despite their comfortable victory, Clan na Gael just missed out on a place in the play-offs while defeat means that St Mochtas will now face Naomh Fionnbarra in a promotion/relegation battle.

The game was as good as over in a first half that the Louth Village side will want to forget quickly. The dismissal of Declan Byrne in the opening half severely dented the Mochtas hopes and the Clans took advantage with goals from Brendan Begley and Conall McKeever to lead by 2-9 to 0-3 at half time.

The Clans continued to pile on the pressure after the break and added further goals through Brendan Begley and Billy Smith to complete a comfortable win.

CLAN NA GAEL: Sean Smith; Stephen Fitzpatrick, Paul Crewe, Gary Hoey 0-1; Leo Martin 0-1, Paul Gartland, JJ Quigley; Ray McCabe 0-2, Billy Smith 1-2; Michael McKeown, Paul Gore, Mark Newell; Conall McKeever 1-6, Brendan Begley 2-1, Robbie Curran 0-2.

ST MOCHTAS: Conor Ryan; Liam Lawlor, Paul Marron, David Lennon; Donal Gernon, Philip Englishby, Darren McMahon; Gareth O'Reilly 0-1, Declan Byrne; Eamonn O'Neill 0-2, Ciaran Byrne 0-3, Liam McGrenaghan; Nigel Farrell 0-1, Shane McMahon 0-1, Danny Kindlon.
