Fechin's see off Rovers to seal the deal

Division 2 Football League: St Fechins 1-13 Hunterstown Rovers 0-6

St Fechin's were crowned Division 2 champions when they scored a comfortable win away to Hunterstown Rovers on Saturday evening.

The Termonfeckin side went into the game knowing that a win would secure the title ahead of O'Connells and they made no mistake with a fine team display against a Hunterstown team who had won the last meeting between the teams.

The match was played in a downpour but it did not stop St Fechins getting on the scoreboard with a point from Ronan Holcroft after five minutes. The visitors continued to score a further 1-6 without reply including a goal from Adam O'Neill that slipped through the goalkeeper's hands.

Hunterstown scored two points in the closing minutes of the first half through Glen Mathews and Padraig Matthews to cut the gap to 1-7 to 0-2 at the break.

The second half again saw St Fechins score five unanswered points before the 25th minute where Hunterstown found their scoring boots with four successive points with David Finn, and Colm Murphy on target. Adam O'Neill got the final score the Division 2 league campaign for St Fechins to cap a memorable season.

Captain Bevan Duffy was presented with the McShane Cup from County Board Chairman, Des Halpenny. Bevan thanked the players and management team and also gave a special mention to all the supporters who came on such a wet evening.
