Clinical Connells off to a flyer

GAA Division 2 Football League: O'Connells 3-11 St Josephs 0-7

O'Connells got their Division 2 League campaign off to a winning start with a 13-point victory over St. Josephs at a very wet Cluskey Park on Friday night.

Jackie Agnew got the first point of the game in the first minute for O'Connells.

A point from Niall Conlon increased their lead and a minute later they had their first goal of the game when Robert Quigley found Cian Doyle and he rounded the keeper to shot to the net.

The Bellingham side were in full control at this stage and got their second goal when Conlon passed to Doyle who made it 2-2 to no score after 12 minutes.

Killian Staunton got the Dromiskin men on the board with a point and not long after Craig Doherty landed their second from a free. O'Connells finished the half better and got three more points from Conlon, a Quigley free and an excellent effort from out near the touchline by Jason Carroll to leave the score at the break 2-5 to 0-2 to the O'Connells.

Staunton got the first point of the second half for the home side but Conlon replied for the visitors to keep the status quo. The teams shared the next four points Conal Smyth and Alan McKenna for the Joes and Agnew and Conlon for O'Connells.

The Bellingham side got their third goal of the game and Doyle completed his hat-trick to make it 3-8 to 0-5 after 40 minutes.

Quigley and McKenna landed frees for their teams and two more points in a minute from Quigley and Agnew all but sealed the victory for the Bellingham side. McKenna got the last point of the game going into the last ten minutes.

Neither side managed to score in the remainder of the game but O'Connells keeper Stuart Reynolds did pull off two great saves from Doherty and Smyth to stop the home side getting back in the game.
