Targeting of Gardai condemned

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Declan Breathnach has said that any intimidation of Gardaí in the Louth Garda division must be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law. Deputy Breathnach was commenting as a Garda investigation is underway into an alleged arson attack on a car belonging to a member of An Garda Síochána.

"I was disgusted to hear this morning a car, believed to belong to a member of An Garda Síochána, has been destroyed," Deputy Breathnach said. "Two other cars, situated near the vehicle and also believed to belong to members of the force, received minor damage.

He said that this kind of attack is "unacceptable in any scenario but there is something particularly repugnant about an attack on a serving member of the Gardaí, whose sole purpose is to keep people safe and uphold lawful order".

"We cannot allow a situation where criminal thugs are threatening Gardaí in an effort to intimidate them. As with anyone else, Gardaí work hard to pay for their cars and belongings and should not be subject to threats in the very place that they should feel safe," he added.

"I am glad that no one was injured in the attack but the next time this might not be the case."
