A major security operation was put in place in Rockfield Manor, off Hoey's Lane, last Friday morning after a suspected pipe bomb was found in the garden of a house.

Residents in a number of homes adjoining the house in the estate and neighbouring Glenwood were evacuated after the alarm was raised at 9.30am when the suspicious device was discovered in the garden.

It's believed that the copper pipe had been left there overnight.

Gardai immediately sealed off the area and the Army Bomb Disposal Unit was called to examine the scene.

They removed the device from the scene and a garda spokesperson said that technical results from the Army Bomb Disposal Unit are awaited as to whether it was a viable device.
