St. Stephen's Day 5k run

Over 350 people took part in the 5k run through the town on St. Stephen's Day.

The event was organised by the Dundalk Athletics Association, as a fundraiser for the planned new state of the art running track in town.

Dunleer A.C runner Daragh Greene was the confirmed winner with the fastest time of 15.21, followed by Thomas Cotter on 15.34 and Mark Hoey on 17.02.

The winning female winner was Karen Costello with a time of 18.19, followed by Erin Leavy on 18.26 and Nicola Welsh on 18.56.

Plans for the new athletics track, which is proposed for a nine acre site close to the Heinz building and JJB sportsdome received a boost in the run up to Christmas, with the awarding of a €92,500 regional capital grant towards the cost.

The Dundalk Athletics Association which has been spearheading the new running track plans comprises of members from six local running clubs including St. Peter's A.C, Mountpleasant A.C, Blackrock A.C. St.Gerard's A.C, the North East Runners and Dun Dealgan A.C
