Sporting hero Sonia Hoey has travelled to Mexico this week for life changing treatment.
Sonia (42) flew out to Mexico over a week ago, following the huge response to a fundraising initiative launched just a few months ago
She told the Argus she had spent a few days in Cancun recuperating, to prepare herself for the intensive treatment beginning this week.
'My treatment will consist of eight hours every day from Monday to Saturday, with Sunday to recover.'
She said she hoped to keep everyone at home updated as to hoe the treatment was progressing.
Sonia and was originally diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer in February 2019.
She underwent an aggressive treatment of radiation and chemotherapy every day for two months.
It was only after almost a year in remission that she got the sad news for the second time in July 2020, incurable cervical cancer had returned and this time it has spread to her lungs.
Because Sonia has received the maximum dose of radiation, she couldn't undergo this treatment again, and all that was offered to her was palliative care, as her tumours are sadly both inoperable and incurable.
Her family say the could not accept being given twelve months to spend with her while she is receiving chemotherapy treatment that leaves her very sick.
The best option they could find was through the Hope for Cancer clinic in Mexico who will offer nontoxic protocols that will improve Sonia's overall condition and help shrink her tumors.
While working to raise the money for this life changing treatment Sonia followed a strict diet, while using alternative treatments to help suppress the cancer for a short period of time.
'This treatment alongside the current treatment would be the best possible chance for Sonia to prolong her life,' her family explained.
A hugely successful GoFundme campaign 'Save ourSonia; was launched just a few months ago to give Sonia a chance to travel to the clinic in Mexico for treatment.
With the original aim of raising €80,000 to cover the three week treatment, Sonia and her family where overwhelmed by the response which has to date seen almost €108,000 in donations.
'Anyone who knows Sonia will know what an avid sportsperson she is and will understand how much of a shock this diagnosis has been for the whole family,' her family admitted during the gofundme campaign
Sonia is well recognised for a number of achievements in sports and has previously played with Dundalk FC, Peamount Ladies FC and Blackrock FC. She was awarded Argus Sports Star of the year in 2005 and won the FAI Cup Final with Dundalk FC also in 2005. She was the captain of the DKIT football college team and won the Interprovincial college tournament. Sonia played Gaelic with her local club Dowdallshill and with Louth's women's team.
