Darver resident Patricia Kieran is hosting a Big Coffee Morning and Glam Sale in the local community centre on Sunday in aid of the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre, Drogheda.

As someone who has been living with cancer for the last three years, Patricia has availed of the services offered by the centre and is organising this fund-raising event as a way of giving something back.

'The Gary Kelly Centre is a wonderful place and where people with cancer can drop in and get great support from counsellors and nurses and others who know what they are going through,' says the mother of three.

Patricia, who is originally from Galway, moved to live in Darver after meeting her husband Michael, who is involved in organising the Combines 4 Charity event.

She worked as a business analyst in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, setting up the IT system, for 30 years until she retired on medical grounds.

'It's nice to give something back' she says of her decision to hold next Sunday's fundraising event in Darver Community Centre.

She has got wonderful support from her family, friends, neighbours and former colleagues so it promises to be a great event for bargain hunters.

'I've got 32 tables which have all been booked, and there will be lots of tea, coffee and home-baking as well as pre-loved and vintage fashion and accessories.'

She had no shortage of takers for the tables, all of which were quickly booked up.

And the timing of the event is apt, as it coincides with Second Hand September which is being promoted by Oxfam to encourage people not to buy new clothes as part of taking a sustainable approach to fashion.

'I have lots of people who have been clearing out their wardrobes so there will be a good selection of good quality pre-loved and vintage fashion and accessories,' says Patricia.

This means it is the perfect opportunity to pick up some pieces as the new season approaches, with lots of clothes for ladies, men and children, as well as handbags, footwear and accessories.'

And it's not just an occasion to spruce up your wardrobe but a chance to enjoy some delicious home baking and to have a cup of coffee or tea and a chat.

Patricia's Big Coffee Morning and Glam Sale runs from 10am to 3pm on Sunday September 15 in Darver Community Centre.
