Nice surprise for Louth on a special day

February, 1971

Louth GAA followers got a nice St. Valentine's Day surprise in February, 1971 when they travelled to Newcastle to meet the all conquering Down in a NFL fixture. They were expecting the worst -if not a St. Valentine's Day massacre - but came away with a shock win.

Encouraged by a Leslie Toal (pictured) goal after just ten seconds, Louth held on to win by a point for their first win at the venue since 1949 when they beat Down to qualify for the NFL final in which they were beaten by Mayo.

In the 1971 match, Sean O'Neill almost snatched victory for the Down side that included players like Dan McCartan, and Colm McAlarney.

The Louth team was: Paddy Gallagher, Sean Walsh, Jim Mulroy, Danny Culligan, Danny Nugent, Leslie Toal, Davy Byrne, Seamus Kirk, Benny Gaughran, Harry McCarthy, Eugene Sheelan, Michael McDonald, Mick Leech, Michael McKeown and Martin McCarthy. Subs, Paul Kenny, Liam Leech and Johnny Boylan.
