New society hold inaugural meeting

A NEW historical society in Ravensdale held its first meeting last week and are hoping that some of the village's senior citizens can help with the research of the area.

The well-attended inaugural meeting, held in the Sportsman's last Friday, discussed a number of ideas, including recording some of the social history of the area by talking to older people.

Ravensdale Historical Society member, Paul Keane, said there were a lot of good ideas put forward. He said: ' We also discussed researching the rich placenames and townlands in Ravensdale, which themselves will reveal a lot of history.

'There are also a couple of great personal archives of photos and videos of the area that we would be very interested in accessing also'.

Mr Keane said the historical society plans to meet with members of similar local organisations to get an idea of how best to use their time and structure the group.

He said the Ravensdale group wants to affiliate itself with the Louth Archaeological Society and perhaps even publish an annual with volunteers' research.

The historical society will meet again at the Sportsman's on Friday October 9th at 8.30pm. Anyone interested in coming along can contact Mr Keane on 0872241031 or John Greene on 0862587979.
