Michelle McGuinness of The Market Bar worked some voodoo magic to win a trip to New Orleans last week when she took the top prize in the Southern Showdown, sponsored by Hi Spirits, at House, Dublin.

With the competition now in its third year in Ireland, contestants were challenged to find the spirit of M W Heron, the founder of Southern Comfort.

Michelle had go head-to-head with nine other finalists from around the country at the Southern Showdown Final, showcasing her entry to fellow bartenders and industry legends.

Michelle's creation, 'Voodoo Queen' containing Southern Comfort 100 proof, cranberry juice, lemon, and ginger served in a trademark a absinthe rinsed glass, impressed the three judges so much that she won the top prize of a trip to New Orleans in July.

'I had to create the concept for the cocktail and come up with a back story and mine was based on a real voodoo queen, Marie Laveu who was born and died in New Orleans,' explains Michelle. 'We were marked on taste, appearance, speed and techniques as a bar tender.'

'I am delighted to have won the prize and will get the chance to showcase my cocktail over there,' says Michelle. The prize includes return flights to New Orleans, 4-star accommodation, tickets to Tales of The Cocktail, and a tour of Louisiana's famous swamps.

Michelle's 'Voodoo Queen' can be tasted in the Market Bar.
