Hosted last Gaeltacht in this part of country
Omeath was the last Gaeltacht in this part of the country, with the last native speaker Annie O'Hanlon, dying in 1960.
'I remember her well as we were both Anne Dobbin before our marriage,' says Anne McKeown.
The current volume of 'Omeath -A look at the past' contains an article by Róisín which looks at the history of Omeath Park. This was where Eoin Mac Neill founded the Irish College Colaiste Bhride in 1912 and visitors to the college included Padraig Pearse and Peada O Dubhda.
Anne recalls Eoin MacNeill's daughter Eibhlin Tierney visiting Omeath and tears welling in her eyes as she remembered attending the Irish college as a young girl.
Róisín notes the the centenary of the founding of the college takes place in 2012 and says that the society will be doing something to mark that occasion.
