Ahern remains a keen soccer fan

BORN in Dundalk in April 1955, Dermot Ahern was educated at the Marist College and later attended the University College Dublin.

Afterwards he studied at the Law Society of Ireland and practiced as a solicitor for many years before his political career progressed into government.

Currently living in Blackrock with his wife Maeve, he has two daughters, Dearbhal and Aislinn. A well-known supporter of Dundalk F.C, being a familiar face in the stand at home matches in Oriel Park, he was a former treasurer of the supporters club.

He is also a former chairman of Rock Celtic soccer club, and has taken up golf and at one stage he was a very keen windsurfer, which saw him take the title ' Ulster Windsurfing' champion.
