Rashida snaps up national awards

Margaret Roddy

Faughart photographer Rashida Keenan has scooped two major awards when she was named as Irish Professional Photographer of the Year and Portrait Photographer of the Year at the IPPVA Professional Photographer of the Year Awards held in Thomas Prior Hall, Ballsbridge, last Sunday.

This is a major achievement for Rashida who only took up photography three years ago. Since then she has established a reputation as a talented photographer with an eye for capturing those special moments which her clients cherish.

A native of Warrenpoint, Co Down, Rashida moved to Co Louth after getting married to Cooley man Ivan Keenan. The couple live in Faughart, close to the border, with their three young children, the youngest of whom is just four months old.

'I worked as an Occupational Therapist in Meath and Louth for almost ten years but always knew that there was something else I should be doing,' says Rashida.

Her venture into the world of photography began three years ago when she bought a camera on her daughter's first birthday.

'I bought it with the intention of documenting my children's childhood and so began a love affair with capturing moments,' she explains.

' I enrolled in an online diploma and would study at night when I got my children to bed, she continues. 'That all seems like a distant memory now but it was only a few years ago.'

Rashida quickly built up a following as she shared her work on social media and she was named as Wedding Photographer of the Year at the Irish Wedding Awards in 2017, just a year after picking up a camera.

She now works as a wedding, portrait and a commercial photographer.

'Three years on from getting my first camera I have been named as Irish Professional Photographer of the Year 2019. It's very surreal and I still can't believe it.

'I am just delighted and would like to thank all my clients and those that have supported me and followed my work.'
