Pride Of Place
Last Friday was a red letter day for the village as we got the opportunity to show off all that is good about the area in both a modern and historical sense.
As we have previously mentioned Louth County Council have nominated the village for the Pride Of Place competition and last Friday the judges and their entourage arrived to the village. First stop was the newly refurbished community Hub which they were impressed with. Chair of the Ardee Municipal Area Councillor Dolores Malone opened proceedings and Chairperson of the Community Hub Paul Kelly welcomed all especially the two judges. There then was a presentation by Damian Mc Cann which was excellent. The judges moved on to the Church were they were greeted by Fr. Sean Mc. Mc. Ardle P.P. Then yo the credit union to be shown around by Tommy Kirk. They then were driven around by Paul Englishby who very kindly drove them around accompanied by Michael Murphy who pointed out the various interesting places that the area has to offer. They seen the new playground and the to Ardpatrick were John Mc. Ardle explained how St. Oliver Plunket had his Church there and ordained priests and also its association with St. Patrick.
Then it was on to Pairc Mochta were he was met by playing and committee members of St. Mochtas G.F.C. We then made our way to St. Mochtas house and the historic St. Marys Abbey Where actors from the film The Burning Of The Wild Goose Lodge performed. Also there was the local Louth Abbey Vintage Club who have done tremendous charity work and run the St. Patricks day parade over this last number of years.
They then returned to the community Hub were final speeches took place and were the local people who turned out in great numbers could meet the judges and various visitors. It was a perfect opportunity to showcase the village with all its with attributes.
Sporting and different organisations were able to show themselves such as Winning golfer Brendan Lawlor St. Mochtas ladies and men's team the bowls which was the backbone of the oldx community centre and deserve great praise for the way they cared for the old building. The Vintage club the youth club The Guides and Brownies the Karate club.
One stand out event was before the judges retired to the Community Hub they were taken there in a vintage car driven by Pat Keenan stopping at Eddie Murphys where Eddie who is 70 years at the corner filled the car with petrol we believe at 1949 prices. The day ended with refreshments being served and we know the judges were impressed by the whole day. We wish the organising committee all the best in the competition and congratulate them on the manner in which the ran the day.
Congratulations to our local sports people who have done the area proud this week. We send congratulations to Aoife and Eimear Byrne and Dearbhla O Connor who were members of the winning Louth ladies football team who last Saturday defeated Antrim in the All Ireland Semi Final and we wish them well in the final. The girls are valued members of St. Mochtas ladies team.
We also send our congratulations to local bowler Paul Duff who has being selected on the Irish team for the forthcoming international matches to be played in Scotland
We send best wishes to St. Mochtas who play Clan Na Gael in Pairc Mochta this coming Saturday evening in the semi final of the promotion race. We hope they get good support as their performance this year deserves it.
Naomh Malachi club members, players, family and friends had a great night's craic in the Clubrooms last Friday night, 23rd August when they commemorated the championship winning teams of '79 and '09.
There was a great attendance from the former players and they had many recollections from their respective years. A number of the ruins of those years were re run.
Commemorative scrolls were presented to the panellists by the Club Chairman.
The Kilkerley/Naomh Malachi Minor team played Roche Emmets GFC in Roche last Wednesday 21st August in the Minor A Championship Group 3 game. This proved to be a close contest between the local rivals however the home side finished on top, 1-10 to 1-6.

Shelagh youth club was delighted to be able to run day trips and summer camp over the last 2 weeks for their members, family and friends. A great day was had by almost 70 people on a trip to Fort Lucan in Dublin for a fun filled day in the outdoor adventure playground and the sun was shining on them throughout. The children really enjoyed the water slides, play areas, zip lines and most importantly being with their friends during the summer holidays.
Our over 12s group had a tour of Butlers Chocolate Factory in Clonshaugh Dublin on Wednesday last where they got to see first-hand how the delicious Irish chocolate is made and got a chance to decorate their own chocolate figure! They then went onto the Pavilion Shopping Centre in Swords for some lunch and shopping. Everyone enjoyed the day out and it was a day with a difference in the summer holidays. Thank you to Moley's coaches and their drivers for their professional bus service!
The Club was delighted to have Sarah Reel last week in the club to run a dance camp for the week. All the children have certainly excelled and learned some pretty fantastic moves throughout the week.
