150 years of CBS education celebrated with new book

Margaret Roddy

CBS Primary and Colaiste Ris Secondary continue their celebrations of 150 years of CBS education in Dundalk, with the launch of a book commemorating that landmark anniversary.

The book is the brainchild of Gerry (Jasper) McDonnell, a former student of the primary and secondary schools, and who recently retired from teaching in the primary school.

Gerry came up with the idea of replicating the centenary book of 1969 two years ago and started working on the project in December 2018 when the sesquicentenary committee got together.

This was a mammoth task and he worked tirelessly on collecting photographs and commissioning articles for the book.

He linked closely with Liam Flynn (Printers) and his team of proof readers. Under the guidance of graphic designer Alex Mc Govern Smith, students from both the primary and secondary school were involved in designing the book covers.

The result is a very handsome volume featuring a fascinating collection of articles by former and current pupils, and staff on a variety of subjects, from the history of the school and Dudalk to their experiences in the classroom and playing fields.

Among those who have contributed articles are Prof Brian McCraith, President of DCU, and his predecessor, Danny O'Hare, former Irish Ambassadors Brendan Rogers and Joe Hamil, heart surgeon Dr Hugh McCann, actor and writer Ferfal McElherron, musician Riona O Duinnin, and comedian Patrick McDonnell.

There are also old photos as well as class photos of the current students of both the primary and secondary school.

The publication of the book was a massive undertaking but Jasper and his team were determined to bring it to fruition for this momentous occasion. Both schools are delighted with the outcome and would like to extend their thanks to Jasper and everyone who was involved with this project.

Copies of the book are available at the school reception at a cost €20
