The crowds thronged Sandy Lane last Sunday to get their first glimpse in most instances of the new look community centre.

And the visitors were wowed by the improvements that have been made to the interior of the building that was opened 30 years ago.

The Centre Committee decided to stage a joint celebration with Christmas so imminent, and Santa made an appearance.

There was also seasonal music with carol singing, and a Christmas craft fair, along with kids' games, face painting and much more. Refreshments were also served.

But the main purpose of the afternoon was to allow local people to view the revamped building which was the culmination of two years planning by the community centre committee in conjunction with the groups, clubs and classes using the centre along with other community groups in Blackrock and Haggardstown.

One of the organisers estimated that as many as 1,000 people turned up over the course of the afternoon. 'So many turned up it was unreal. They were overwhelmed by what they saw. The place looked amazing'.
