Artist Thomas gets out of studio to join litter patrol

Artist Thomas Brezing, from Balbriggan, Co. Dublin, the current artist-in-residence on the Creative Spark Residency Programme, has been getting out of the studio and joining Blackrock Tidy Towns, gathering litter from the beach.

A native of Germany, Thomas moved to Ireland in the early 1990's. He has exhibited widely in Ireland and also in Germany, Wales, Finland and Belgium.

As Thomas is committed to raising awareness towards environmental issues through his art, while at Creative Spark Dundalk he used the opportunity to join Blackrock Tidy Towns, a few miles down the road from Dundalk. One evening a week he goes to Blackrock and picks up litter, on patrol, as they call it. In collaboration with Clean Coasts he has organised a beach clean-up at Loughshinny beach, Co. Dublin.

To highlight the damage being done to our oceans by discarded plastic and pollution, Thomas is currently collecting used footballs from which he plans to create a giant whale. He has also been busy developing a new series of work for the Creative Spark Residency Programme exhibition at An Táin Arts Centre in October 2017.

His residency, which began in February, finishes at the end of the April. Creative Spark will welcome more artists in October for the 2016/7 residency programme which is supported by Louth County Council.
