What would you do if you were told your life expectancy? Would it scare you? Or would it motivate you to make changes to improve it?
Here on Real Health, we’re all about bringing you the information you need to make changes to improve your health and wellbeing and that’s exactly what we’re going to talk about with my guest this week.
I’m delighted to be joined by Dr Phil Kieran, Cork based GP, who is the presenter of RTE’s How Long Will You Live. The show follows six people, aiming to improve their overall health and life expectancy by making small but impactful changes.
Phil says it’s important that we keep up the activities we are doing, especially as we get older. “The day you stop doing stuff because of your age, is the last day you’ll be able to do it. If you give up doing something, it’s very hard to get that back. It’s not impossible and it’s always the right time to improve your health and lifestyle.”
Instead, Phil says it’s easier to maintain your fitness level and keep up movement from an early age, rather than giving up and then trying to get back into it at a later stage.
We also discuss why the aim shouldn’t be to just live longer but also to live better. Phil says many people will question if they want to live into their eighties, when they see how their parents or grandparents mightn’t have been in great health at the same age.
“The key thing you want is to get to that age with complete independence, still being able to move around enough that you enjoy your pastimes.”
