For Michael Murphy, despite twenty years working in Bord Bia, he had a desire to go it alone that wouldn’t leave him.

“It was a niggle in the back of my head that wouldn’t go away,” he says. “And I knew I had to give it a go or else I would be sorry and always wondering what if?”

After spending many hours with his parents in hospitals, he knew he wanted to develop a product that would have significant health benefits and so Pro U, a fortified yoghurt for bone and muscle nutrition was born.

After 20 years in Bord Bia he might have understood what products customers wanted, but it was a steep learning curve in relation to distribution and developing a business. Six months and six learnings, he describes the initial journey as.

“It has been an exhilarating baptism of fire, bringing with it a rollercoaster of emotions, from excitement, anticipation and elation, to fear, confusion and frustration,” he says.

“We have hit speed bumps along the way (show me a start-up which hasn’t!) but some quick footwork and a dose of good fortune have put us back on track. Every day you keep going is a success."
