"My father always taught me to be the master of my own destiny," explains John Sherry of GardenRooms.ie. "And so I was always very independent and loved the idea of being my own boss".
However, the downside meant that the recession saw the implosion of his business in 2008-09 with revenue down by 80% and things were looking bleak.
What kept him going was diversifying into kids outdoor garden play which provided a much-needed additional income stream and then things began to pick up again.
"When your back is against the wall it's funny how you find a way to survive and to find a way out. Thankfully when the country started coming back so too did our GardenRooms business."
"Most importantly though, believe in yourself and back yourself when it matters. If it makes commercial sense and you graft at it and become an expert at it then you will get the rewards. Don’t be afraid to swim upstream and have the courage of your convictions."
