On this week’s show, Brian Purcell speaks to Emerald De Leeuw who is the award winning CEO of EuroComply and an internationally recognised Data Protection specialist. She was recently presented with the European Innovator of the Year 2017 award by the European Commission, Parliament and EYIF in Brussels for her work with EuroComply.

EuroComply is software which helps companies assess, track and demonstrate GDPR compliance. 'Accountability' is a core principle of the General Data Projection Regulation, and EuroComply's software gives companies the ability to demonstrate their accountability.

With EU regulations on GDPR compliance coming into force in 2018, companies are scrambling to make sure they are up-to-date with the new laws.

“Data protection law is not a new thing but the fines associated with GDPR are incredibly high,” she explains. “The old legislation dates back to 1995 when the world was a different place, and data wasn’t everywhere. Nowadays data is invasive and data protection is a human right. People need to be able to trust companies with their data and GDPR creates one law that applies to companies all across Europe.”

Emerald is from Holland but her mother is from Cork and she moved to Ireland to study in UCC. Now based in Dublin with Eurocomply, she says she never had any goal of becoming an entrepreneur but her studies and expertise directed her more and more in this direction with Eurocomply.

“I always figured I’d be a lawyer and I never had a desire to be an entrepreneur but I won a ticket to Cork Start-Up Weekend. So, I drew up a rough outline of how I thought a compliance software platform could work and some of the investors listening thought it was a good idea.”

“Sitting in the library sometime afterwards I had my eureka moment and realised that law wasn’t going to be my future, business was. I would never have been able to live with it if someone had taken my idea and made a success of it. I knew I had to make it happen and pitched successfully to Cork Ignite which helped to set us on the road for our development.”

Emerald will be speaking at ‘DataSec’, INM’s GDPR-focused conference, which takes place in the RDS on May 3rd. For more information and to book tickets go to independent.ie/datasec.
