READY BUSINESS PODCAST: From revolutions to recessions, staying 100 years in business
Paul Brereton is the fourth generation of the Brereton family business which has been in existence since 1916. From the pawnbrokers and jewellers on Capel St to its shops on O'Connell St and Grafton St, the Brereton business story is one of surviving the Rising, revolutions, recessions and, most recently, technological change.
When Paul Brereton joined in 2003, online retail was still in its infancy but he saw where it was heading and sought to bring a century’s old company into the digital age.
But it wasn’t a case of ditching the past either, and he explains to Brian Purcell how Breretons survived for over a hundred years and, that, while online sales are the future for retailers, many of the same principles around craftmanship and service remain the same.
It’s about adapting to the change that the internet and customer behaviour has brought to society and jewellery and diamonds are no different in that regard.
Who knows what technology will be around in another hundred years but Paul Brereton is hoping their name will still be at the forefront of the retail jewellery business in whatever form it takes. For now though, the future, he says, is online.
