What's the best and easiest way to guarantee entry into polite conversation? Usually, the snappiest way to earn immediate acceptance is to have a pop at the Yanks. This often takes the shape of insisting that Americans are dumb rubes and have no sense of irony - although this accepted truth is likely to be stated by some hipster wearing a Breaking Bad T-shirt, an incongruity which is often lost on them. Irony, eh?
Over the last few years, that disdain has spread to our views on their political system. Perhaps the best example of the reflexive, unthinking dismissal of American politics came when one Irish she-comic hopped on the anti-Palin bandwagon by trilling that: "Here in Ireland, we don't hunt animals, we hunt for bargains in Brown Thomas!"
Even Palin's former supporters have finally accepted that she is a complete dingbat, but it always struck me as telling that the very person who also sniffed so derisively about the 'Americanisation' of our high streets would then cite bargain-hunting in an expensive store as a sign of how superior we are.
