Roddy Doyle's Charlie Savage: A blizzard of bread

Charlie Savage

I'm with the little grandson and we're feeding the ducks.

It's years since I gave thought to ducks and their dietary habits. I knew there'd be a gang of them in St Stephen's Green but I didn't want to go that far. Then I remembered the pond in St Anne's Park. I used to go there when I mitched from school and there were always ducks decorating the water. So, I reckoned their great-great-grandducks would be there now - and I was right.

Anyway. We have our ducks lined up and they're getting the bread whether they want it or not. But they're not complaining. The little lad is flinging whole slices at them and they're grabbing them like there's no tomorrow - a bit like we all did a few weeks back when the world was ending… Sorry, when it started to snow.
