The Fine Gael leadership contest is providing a fascinating insight into how Leo Varadkar and Simon Coveney are both tantalisingly close to being correct, and therefore both entirely wrong, in their separate analyses of what should be Fine Gael.

So, when Fine Gael people say they are blessed with two fine candidates, that too is almost certainly the case, but because the presentations made by both men are still wide of the mark, the ultimate outcome of this contest may be that Fine Gael will contrive to lose another election that is there for the taking.

Of the two candidates, Varadkar is closer to what we might call the emerging political order when he refers to the "new centre", that is, what he describes as a centre that takes the best from the left and right of the political spectrum.
