Lots of women exhibited great courage in 2013 but Miley let us down

It was a dog fight in miserable weather conditions. Pretty it wasn't, but winning the rugby grand slam was one of the stand-out moments of 2013.

No, this isn't a column from 2009, when the men's rugby team did the grand slam. I'm referring to the women's rugby team who made being Irish the greatest feeling on Earth when captain Fiona Coughlan and her team beat Italy on St Patrick's Day. They're top of my female sporting heroes for 2013. As Kathyrn Thomas said: "There's no point sending a man to do a woman's job."

Majella O'Donnell gets a standing ovation as the most inspiring Irish woman this year. She shaved her hair to raise awareness and money for the Irish Cancer Society, and the flood of goodwill that this brave move triggered caused the society's text service and website to crash.
