Work doesn’t end at 3.30

Sir -- With regard to Colm O'Rourke (Sunday Independent, April 11, 2010), I, as a public sector worker (Motor Tax office, Dublin) would like to clarify a few facts.

We close at 3.30 and serve every customer who is in the office at that time, which could take between 30 and 90 minutes depending on the time of month, after which we balance accounts and print daily reports. We also provide a very efficient postal service, with a turnaround of approximately five days. I take great offence to the comment that we show a lack of courtesy and service to the public who call to the office or post in their application. Every customer is dealt with in a courteous manner and every effort is made to ensure they receive a satisfactory service. Reading Mr O'Rourke's article you would think we are all sitting in our gardens at 3.30. Every Sunday there seems to be an article in your newspaper degrading the public sector workers, but I am surprised at Mr O'Rourke, being a schoolteacher, jumping on to

the bandwagon.
