Madam -- Eddie O'Connor claims that Energy Bridge will create enough wind energy to power 3.5 million homes (Letters, Sunday Independent, October 21, 2012). Actually, zero homes are powered on a calm day. In fact, nowhere in the world has one home ever been powered by even one turbine, as every energy system requires fossil fuel back-up to run alongside wind power.
Scotland plans to export to England a far greater amount, and when the wind is not blowing there it won't be blowing much here either.
The demand for wind energy in England is attributable to the belief that it will reduce dependence on fossil fuels and reduce CO2 emissions. This is clearly not the case. Therefore it is only a matter of time before England's love affair with turbines turns sour. In fact, this is already happening as UK consumers see their energy bills rise every year to pay for their own wind hysteria.
