Why atheists need to do the maths on God

• Though atheism is thriving in Ireland it seems for some to be a holding position until the leadership of the churches, particularly that of the Catholic Church, engages more intelligently with how priests and people actually think and live.

Though I have found involvement in the Christian/atheist debate very enlightening, I find militant, intolerant atheism and militant, intolerant Christianity equally debilitating to the human quest for significance and meaning that we share with all humanity -- a quest that should unite rather than divide us.

Some atheists seem convinced that those of us who believe in God are trapped in a way of viewing the world that is debilitating to our personal and collective growth.
