We need reform now

Sir -- Your article on the need for radical political and electoral reform is timely (Sunday Independent, February 27). We would like to add our views on the subject.

We would suggest the Taoiseach should be elected by popular vote and the Dail term reduced to four years.

The whip should be removed (except for finance bills), thus reducing the power of the Executive and increasing the power of the Dail. We only need 100 Dail deputies and the constituencies should be one-seaters, but retaining the transferable vote.
