We can't afford to fund Gaeilge
Madam -- A confession. On obtaining my copy of the Sunday Independent, immediately I consign to the recycling bin the Sport, Life and Living sections. But last week, in so doing I caught sight of the piece by Declan Lynch, 'Text this Irish language crowd'. Brilliant! Which, for once, prompted me to scan Life. And I wasn't disappointed, for there was 'Seachtain Na Gaeilge' by Will Hanafin, equally brilliant.
Why do I find them so? Because here are two Irishmen brave enough (or angry enough?) to question the continued huge financial support for a virtually dead language. Might the Roscommon Hospital A&E be open 24/7 still if funds were not siphoned off to support Gaelic?
To me, the hysteria regarding the language is cited graphically in the article by Concubhar O Liathain wherein he criticises both the Gaeltacht Bill and the perceived lack of support for Gaelic. But, he chooses to express his dissatisfaction in which language? English!
