Unionism and gays
• My belief in the union is today more absolute than ever. Yet every now and again I experience days when being a unionist causes me to want to crawl back under the bedclothes and stay there.
One such occasion happened last week when unionism, with the exception of a brave few (including Basil McCrea, credit where it is due) decided that gay marriage was not for Northern Ireland.
Indeed, the decision was taken that equality might not be afforded to a citizen on the basis of the sex of the person they fall in love with.
