Under-age sex

• In the context of writing about the Jimmy Savile scandal, Mary Kenny quotes me as saying: "Despite what the puritans and sex-haters say, under-age sex is mostly consenting, safe and fun" (Irish Independent, October 8).

I made no such statement in relation to the allegations against Mr Savile. I have never excused his behaviour. I condemn it.

The quote Mary Kenny cites has been dragged up from many years ago. I was referring to 'Romeo and Juliet' scenarios, involving two young people of similar ages. For example, two 15-year-olds.
