Under-fours are suffering from word poverty because of too much TV

IT's great news that Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has ordered more class time for learning basic literacy and numeracy. Unfortunately, an increasing problem for teachers is children starting school suffering from 'word poverty' -- ie, they have spent so much time watching TV they are unable to communicate adequately.

The American Academy of Paediatrics states that under-twos should not watch any TV.

But the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists suggests it's okay for under-twos to watch TV -- a big mistake.

Parents have a duty to present their children for school with an ability to communicate. Keep the TV switched off for under-fours.
