Turkey does not belong in Europe

No political party has declared its stance on Turkish accession to the European Union, therefore I am curious how the Government felt empowered to authorise the President to galvanise momentum towards accession.

President Mary McAleese's hope "that there would be stronger business links to boost the €1bn of trade between Ireland and Turkey" (Irish Independent, March 24) focuses on the economic arguments for Turkish membership and neglects the effects of Turkish membership on social cohesion.

Furthermore, Ireland should not feel pressured into support for Turkish membership merely because of the strategic military interests that the US has in its Turkish airbases.
