Tired of the Aras
•Our tiny country is like a curragh in danger of sinking from the backwash of the world's financial super-tanker being battered by an economic tsunami.
Yet the media is fixated by a presidential election that has about as much relevance in the overall scheme of things as who the next mayor of Valentia Island in Kerry will be. We have an amazing capacity in this country for denying the obvious.
Maybe it's a comfort blanket, perhaps denial is a defence mechanism. Political leaders, however, have a greater responsibility than the ordinary pundit. In these extraordinary turbulent economic times, issues like the future president of Ireland is the Land of Lilliput.
Perhaps this is what makes our island so attractive to tourists. We take everything seriously except what really matters.
